Here is the story of how making fresh carrot juice every prevented the flu and colds in my family for 8 months. I am now a total believer in juicing for health every morning for my entire family; including my 2 and 3 year old babies.
It all started when I became a mom. As an older mom, I gave birth to one baby at 38 and the second one at 39, literally 11 months apart. The pregnancies took a tole on my body, and post pregnancy wasn’t much easier. I seemed to catch one cold after the other, which I would then give to my kids. Needless to say, caring for small infants and being sick with colds and flus was not easy.
Why were my kids getting sick so often? Why was I? I did not know. My kids were not in a day care, I did not work outside the house, nor were they around a lot of little kids or kids’ equipment. I made my own baby food, I always washed their hands when we went anywhere, yet STILL they would get sick. Sometimes I would keep them home for a whole week trying to prevent a cold or flu in the winter, and in the comfort of our own home they would come down with a cold. Yickes! Looking back I would say that my family was getting sick two or three times a month, and the colds would last a week or so. Winter time was worse.
This question started my journey into health and wanting to become a “Living Healthy mom.” I could either accept the fact that my family would be sick all the time and accept that I would have to cancel birthday parties, play dates and vacations because “someone” in the family was sick, or………I could do something about it.
I chose to be proactive with my family’s health to prevent colds and flus. I declared to my husband who at the time thought I was on a temporary “kick,” that my goal was to feed my family the healthiest foods that I could, and monitor if this action helps prevent colds and flus. I knew I had so much to learn, but I never realized how little I knew. The more I researched the more interested I became in health. I also became convinced that what we put in our mouths could make a big difference to prevent the flu and colds.
The first thing I did was to think about what I had been exposed to in my own life. With the wonderful teachings of my own mom who has always been very health conscious, I thought back on what she did when we were sick. I remember that my mom used to make homemade carrot juice for us when I was sick as a little girl. She used to tell me that it helped prevent cancer and was so good for you when you had a cold or the flu. I remember that I always enjoyed the taste of carrot juice as a kid, so I researched if carrot juice could help prevent my family from getting sick.
Sure enough, carrot juice not only helps improve your immune system, but there are so many other powerful health benefits. Once I learned about this I had no choice but to start juicing carrot juice as my first step toward health and freedom from colds and flus for my family.
Carrot juice helps promote:
- Good eyesight
- A healthy immune system
- Strong bones
- Strong teeth and gums
- Smooth skin
- Prevents cancer – breast cancer
- It cleans the liver
- Helps metabolize fats and lipids
- Contains anti-aging properties
- Assists in increasing bad cholesterol levels in the body
- Helps relieve spasms and strengthen our blood vessels.
- Helpful with healthy development of the fetus
- Increases your skin’s ability to be in the sun and not get burned. (A natural sunscreen)
- Improves digestion
- Helps prevent scars
So I did it. I bought a juicer. I told my husband that I was going to start making carrot juice every morning for the family before we ate breakfast. (Since carrot juice cleans the liver, I decided that it would be best to drink it first before eating.) My husband was very supportive and our journey of health began.
Every day I gave the kids a big glass of carrot juice. Then I started mixing other vegetables in the juice including bell peppers, kale, celery, beets, and apples. Before I knew it I was tossing in every combination of vegetables I could think of into the juice making it turn all colors of the rainbow.
Now we have been juicing for almost a year. Our babies are almost 2 and 3 and every morning they run into the kitchen and say “juice time.” They sit on our laps and drink their big cup of juice in a minute straight. Sometimes my little girl’s face gets beet red because she uses the straw and doesn’t come up for air until she is finished. She sucks her carrot juice down with delight and then says, ” all done!
I am such a believer of the benefits of carrot juice, that we do not miss a day in the morning without our juice.
